My niece was here today and as she was pulling out of our driveway, she knocked a cornerstone from the stone border surrounding a flower bed. She got out of her car to replace the stone and quickly ran back to the house to warn me that there were snake eggs underneath the stone. Everyone got out of the car and as we were deciding what to do with 8 white eggs, a 5 lined skink came to claim her nest!!!! She is about 8 inches long with stripes from head to tail. I have quite a few of these around my garden but this is the first time I’ve seen a nest.

At one point, it appeared she was trying to move the eggs with her body as they were exposed to the open. We couldn’t replace the stone because “Mama” climbed underneath the stone as it lay askew from its original location. To try to replace it would have crushed her. I quickly found a smaller stone to place over the exposed eggs.

I believe she is a Texas 5-lined Skink, beneficial to one’s garden.

What a treat!
